Now, in this warm and poignant biography, Jim Wight ventures beyond his father's life as a veterinarian to reveal the man behind the stories--the private individual who refused to allow fame and wealth to interfere with his practice or his family. With access to all of his father's papers, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs--and intimate recollections of the farmers, locals, and friends who populate the James Herriot books--only Jim Wight could write this definitive biography of the man who was not only his father but his best friend. | | | |

Good information in a poorly-written book. Jun 08, 2009 I was very excited to find this book at my local library, having first read all of the James Herriot books in my youth. As one might expect, this book is not of the same caliber as those written by the subject. Jim Wight is, by all accounts, a wonderful son and terrific veterinary surgeon (like his father), but he is not much of a writer. It was somewhat difficult to weave my way through the awkward sentences and writing style to get the information I wanted so badly to learn. When I finished, I felt somewhat as though I had boxed a few rounds. Nonetheless, I am glad I got this insight into the real world of the country vet whose stories I enjoyed so much once upon a time.

A real slog Apr 27, 2009 It is true that this author does not have his father's gift for writing. However, we were given the gift of seeing what was behind this fine man and some of the struggles he had.
Must read for Herriot fans Mar 13, 2009 If you have loved the stories of James Herriot you will love this book. It is written by his son, Jim Wight. As I learned, Herriot was a pen name. Mr. Wight writes with almost the same beautiful style that his father used. It's a very easy, enjoyable read.
The Real James Herriot by James Wight Feb 17, 2009 This book is great - arrived safely in New Zealand and is an excellent read - his son is as humerous as him. Thanks for being willing to post internationally.
A satisfying read Feb 13, 2009 I have read and re-read Herriot's books many times over the years, and loved the TV series. It was wonderful to read about the man himself and peek behind the curtain of the stories a little.
It was especially interesting to read how long and hard he worked at his writing before his "overnight success." Isn't it so often the case!
One thing I found horrifying was that of the profits from his books, 5/6ths went to taxes. It really doesn't seem fair.
