No one is better poised to write the biography of James Herriot than the son who worked alongside him in the Yorkshire veterinary practice when Herriot became an internationally bestselling author. Now, in this warm and poignant biography, Jim Wight ventures beyond his father's life as a veterinarian to reveal the man behind the stories--the private individual who refused to allow fame and wealth to interfere with his practice or his family. With access to all of his father's papers, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs--and intimate recollections of the farmers, locals, and friends who populate the James Herriot books--only Jim Wight could write this definitive biography of the man who was not only his father but his best friend.

5The Real James Herriot  Aug 29, 2010
I can't get enough of James Herriot. If the men of the world were more like he was it would be a wounderful place to live. His son wrote this book and who would know him better than he.
James Herriot was a kind and caring person to both man and beast.
I highly recommend this book.

4The Real James Herriot  Apr 25, 2010
While Jim Wight isn't the writer his dad was, I think anyone who loves the James Herriot books will thoroughly enjoy this biography. I appreciated learning more about Alf Wight, the real people he wrote about & especially what happened to them.

5Thanks Jim Wight  Apr 05, 2010
for this lovely book as a memoir to your father. I very much enjoyed the pictures as well and appreciate your hard work in bringing out the real characteristics of your father. Great job. Thanks so much.

3Good information in a poorly-written book.  Jun 08, 2009
I was very excited to find this book at my local library, having first read all of the James Herriot books in my youth. As one might expect, this book is not of the same caliber as those written by the subject. Jim Wight is, by all accounts, a wonderful son and terrific veterinary surgeon (like his father), but he is not much of a writer. It was somewhat difficult to weave my way through the awkward sentences and writing style to get the information I wanted so badly to learn. When I finished, I felt somewhat as though I had boxed a few rounds. Nonetheless, I am glad I got this insight into the real world of the country vet whose stories I enjoyed so much once upon a time.

2A real slog  Apr 27, 2009
It is true that this author does not have his father's gift for writing. However, we were given the gift of seeing what was behind this fine man and some of the struggles he had.
