Samantha

When she manages to get herself hired for the cattle drive, all of Samantha's prayers seem to be answered. The hundred dollars she'll earn will pull her family's Texas farm out of ruin and pay off their debts. But keeping the cowhands fooled that she's a boy becomes harder than she'd expected where one cowboy in particular is concerned.

The Cowboy

Matthew Hart wants two things: to forget the tragedies he witnessed on the front lines of the War Between the States, and to reclaim his cowboy life. The last thing he wants is the responsibility of a tagalong youngster on the cattle drive. His closed mind and hardened heart are territory best left unexplored, until a fateful moment turns his world upside down.

Matt discovers what and who "Sam" really is, and he is furious. But soon a stronger emotion takes hold, and bound by Samantha's secret, Matt is torn between revealing her identity and his own sudden and frightening love for her.

4Ye-Ha!  Feb 22, 2008
Heart-throb Cowboy, all the way. Yes, Matt is exceptionally drool-worthy. Samantha and the Cowboy is a great western romance. Well done, and very cute. Who doesn't appreciate a girl dressed up as a guy? The problem is when this "guy" can't ignore her girly feelings towards the cutest cowboy in the crowd. Hey, I don't blame Samantha. He's a handsome fella.
Cute book, great snack-read!

5Samantha and The Cowboy  Feb 01, 2006
Samantha was now Sam. There was no escaping the feeling of having to pretend she was a boy. But the hardest part was making sure no one found out. After getting her mother to agree to let her go on a cattle drive to earn a hundred dollars, Samantha starts to fall in love with Matt the handsome young cowboy on the drive. After crossing the river, where she nearly drowns, he finds out her secret. She was not Sam the boy he was a friend with; she was Samantha Jane who now he was beginning to fall in love with. When Jake, the trail boss, finds out she is a boy, he orders Matt to take her to the train station. But Matt stands up to him along with the other men on the drive. She now knew she was a true trail hand. When Samantha returns home with the hundred dollars, she is just in time for the town dance. Matt shows up, and they spend the whole night dancing. They end up spending the rest of their lives together. I liked this book and would recommend it to any one who likes adventure and romance.

This book has very vivid details. There was one time when Samantha thought that one of the men was going to figure out her secret when the author describes her breathing: " Her breathing started coming in shallow little pants as though it was as afraid as she was that the fella would figure out she was a girl." I like the way he describes things, he makes me feel that I'm in the book.

This book expresses the emotions of the characters very well. When Samantha and Matt are having fights, you can see how much she tries to stop the fights and just likes pleasing everyone. ""She thought she'd go crazy if he kept up this silent treatment. It was such a peaceful night, a good night for mending fences." "I love herding cattle at night," she said quietly. "I find it calming." Silence. Heavy, palpable. Thick enough to slice with a butter knife. "I reckon we're really lucky that the cattle didn't stampede this morning." Nothing from him. Not even a turn of his head. "Have you gone deaf?" she snapped. The only thing worse than being yelled at was being ignored. "How long do you plan to stay angry?" she asked. "Forever." The pain cut into her like a rusty bayonet. She didn't want to admit how much she'd come to like him, to care about him. What ever the feeling is the author makes it powerfully known.

I liked the character Samantha because she was brave and did something that women back then wouldn't have thought of doing. She didn't mind doing what she had to do, even if it was dangerous. She faced all of her fears and became a good trail hand, even when the odds were against her because she was a girl and had never done anything like that before.

Samantha and The Cowboy is a book that is adventurous and touches the heart all at the same time. Anyone, who reads this book, will instantly fall in love with it.

5Definitely one I will read over and over  Jul 07, 2005
This book was not the least bit boring. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down until I had read the entire book. From this book, I was able to taste the real flavor of the south, and the life of a cowboy on the prairie. Something about that wide open expanse of land and that bright sun shining in the blue sky, with dozens of hot cowboys riding their horses just does it for me.

I'm not going to give a summary of the book, because plenty of other reviews already have, but I will tell you what I loved about this book.

It was so fun to see how the main character convinced the cowhands that she was a boy. And when the boys stripped down in front of "Sam" to take a dip in the river--not knowing she was a girl...now that was priceless!

And when Matt found out that Sam was a girl after he saved her from the river...and suddenly began noticing her soft "girlish" features, such as her beautiful green eyes, delicate hands, and of course her curves. He was furious of course, because she had lied to him, but he was instantly attracted to her and couldn't stop thinking about how much he wanted to hold her. This made it extremely difficult for Matt to decide whether or not he would give Samantha's secret away, which would cause her to be kicked off the cattle drive and destroy her chances for earning the lifesaving $100 dollars for her struggling family.

Well, I don't want to give the whole book away, so I'll let you read it yourself, and leave you by telling you that this was a funny, colorful, romantic story set against the backdrop of the South after the Civil War.

And if you love this book, you will probably also love Lorraine Heath's other Avon True Romance Novel for Teens, called Amelia and the Outlaw.

4Go Samantha!  Oct 22, 2003
I didn't think this book looked good from reading the first chapter, but it definitely gets better. Samantha's family is having a hard time since her father died and her brother lost his arm in the war. She signs up for a cattle drive, and the adventure begins! She actually makes a band of cowboys think she is a boy. Soon she falls in love with Matt, a fellow cowboy. But she can't say anything, because she's a boy. Eventually Matt finds out she is a girl and gives Sam a run for her money, literally. He threatens to tell on her, which causes a big problem. But everything works out in the end and everybody lives happily ever after.
