In this book, Turid identifies what she calls calming signals: signals used by dogs to prevent things from happening, from avoiding threats from people and dogs to calming down nervousness and fear. Turid goes on to explain how dogs use calming signals, and how we, as dog owners, can use them as well with our own dogs.

5On talking terms with dogs: Calming Signals  Jul 27, 2010
In my training classes I tend to make use of calming signals when I work with dogs and to show the owners of the dogs what their dogs are communicating to each other.
Body language is used by dogs to "talk' and to calm each other in stress full situations. Although there is no scientific proof it does not mean it ain't so.

This is a great book with lots of illustrations and a good start into body language of dogs which is so important for every dog lover. I believe that this book belongs on any dog owners book shelf.

5wonderfully simple  Jul 15, 2010
I wasn't sure what to expect with such a small book, but in its simplicity it was very informative. A great starting place for anyone who wants to learn more about what your dog is thinking.

3Good but cursory.  Jun 29, 2010
This very short book is a decent introduction to stress behaviors of dogs, but it does not go into depth on how to use this knowledge to help a stressed dog. The most important suggestion of the book, I suppose, is to not be aggressive or violent toward your dog. If you are familiar with and utilize positive training practices but still find yourself with a nervous dog, this book may not be very helpful for you.

5Great primer for communicating with your dog  Jun 04, 2010
Turid Rugaas' book, On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals, is an excellent resource for anyone who wishes to understand just what it is their dog is telling them. It may not be completely thorough (I'm sure there are signals that no one has documented as of yet) but what is here is clearly communicated and the color pictures do a wonderful job in helping you match up signals you learn from the book with things your dog has "said" to you in the past. I know that as I was reading and reflecting on my interactions with my 19 week old Sheltie, I can picture him telling me some of these things and I just never even realized he was speaking to me.

Becoming observant of your dogs' speech will require a lot of work. You really need to be interested in what it is your dog is saying and also in communicating the dog in a way that reflects the dogs own speech patterns and language.

This is a good, quick, easy read and definitely worth cover price for anyone looking to know the language of dogs (or what humans currently know of the language and its meanings).

Recommended!

5A must have!  May 26, 2010
What an outstanding book! I require that all of our clients purchase and read this book upon entering training program.
