The various chemicals used in beekeeping have, for the past decades, held Varroa Destructor, a mite, and other major pests at bay, but chemical-resistance is building and evolution threatens to overtake the best that laboratory chemists have to offer. In fact, there is evidence that chemical treatments are making the problem worse. Natural Beekeeping flips the script on traditional approaches by proposing a program of selective breeding and natural hive management.

Conrad brings together the best organic and natural approaches to keeping honeybees healthy and productive here in one book. Readers will learn about nontoxic methods of controlling mites, eliminating American foulbrood disease (without the use of antibiotics), breeding strategies, and many other tips and techniques for maintaining healthy hives. Conrad's reservoir of knowledge comes from years of experience and a far-flung community of fellow beekeepers who are all interested in ecologically sustainable apiculture. Specific concepts and detailed management techniques are covered in a matter-of-fact, easy to implement way.

Natural Beekeeping describes opportunities for the seasoned professional to modify existing operations to improve the quality of hive products, increase profits, and eliminate the use of chemical treatments. Beginners will need no other book to guide them. Whether you are an experienced apiculturist looking for ideas to develop an Integrated Pest Management approach or someone who wants to sell honey at a premium price, this is the book you've been waiting for.

5minimal chemical for hive management  Mar 28, 2010
Honeybees are in trouble therefore our food supply is in trouble. For anyone who thinks that the blanket use of pesticides and antibiotics may be contributing to the die off of so many hives, this book offers a low impact approach to hive management - this is great book to have.

4beekeeping in a more natural way  Mar 27, 2010
this is a good book for those trying to keep bees with less or no chemical treatment--it is good for hobbyists and backyard beekeepers. wish there were more photos and charts to describe and show methods. a better trend for future beekeeping. worth the purchase.

3Unnecessary Fluff  Feb 11, 2010
While the author provides some usuful basic beekeeping information, he wastes unnecessary space, almost half the book, trying to convince the reader that current liberal political agenda items such as Global Warming is good reasoning to utilize his method of Natural Beekeeping. The question that this leaves me with is, is the author more interested in Beekeeping or Liberal agenda.

I have read a post World War II article from a French author to help reconstruct France that provided better scientific reasons for Natural Beekeeping.

5A Beginners review  Dec 11, 2009
As an apprentice beekeeper I found this book easy to read and understand and also very enlightening. I work with an old-time beekeeper, who (when I told him about some of the natural techniques of bee management portrayed by Ross), he asked if he might borrow my copy of the book... (which incidentally he has not as yet returned). Bottom line is: that I may have to purchase another copy for myself, as he seems quite attached to the one he has borrowed from me. Anyway, perhaps the book was a little too good to hold onto!
