In Handbook of Hatches, Dave Hughes teaches how to match the hatch and not worry about identifying the insect until later, if at all, and to fish better, focus on shape, size, and color to choose the best fly for the situation. This popular reference work is now updated with full-color photos of the insects. It is an understandable approach and useful guide to fishing hatches that covers mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, midges, dragonflies, boatmen, alderflies, and hellgrammites. | | | |

Handbook of Hatches Jul 13, 2010 Wow! This book is loaded with a lot of information, and it's written in a helpful and easy-to-understand manner. The pictures of the naturals and the imitations are the key. It's helped me out in identifying what I've been seeing on the water, and then giving you the flies that should work for the imitation AND how to fish them.
Thank you, Dave. May 22, 2010 One of the first and best books anyone wishing to begin fly fishing should read. My opinion is that there more than a few people thrashing around with a fly rod who could use the knowledge imparted in this book. It is what the title and subtitle say it is, and well written in an interesting way, and backed with real life examples from the author's fishing career. Guide to the naturals, the patterns, and the presentations. Essential handbook for your approach to the water and food sources for trout.
Enjoyed reading this book and will read it again and reference it often, for all the information and techniques that it has to offer. Will not lend my copy to anyone!!!
Thank you, Dave.
Can't match this hatch...book that is! Apr 08, 2010 Good insight and excellent graphics. I have the two classics Hatches II and Caddis Fly. I actually find this more useful and much easier to read.

A "must have" for trout fishers Aug 28, 2009 Dave Hughes is a professional writer that happens to be an avid fly fisherman. That much is obvious after reading one page of his book, "Handbook of Hatches." It would take years of experience to get to the level knowledge and the level of confidence that simply reading this book will take you to. Let's face it, a book about insects could be very tedious, OK, boring; but Mr. Hughes book reads like you are are sitting down and having a conversation with him, while fishing! He has approached this subject in a friendly and enduring style that I would not have though possible. As to the importance of the work; I believe that this is a "must have" reference for anyone that hasn't already spent a lifetime on a trout river.
A Language That I Can Speak May 03, 2009 Another 'must have' fly fishing/fly tying book from Dave Hughes. Armed with just two of Dave's books, "Handbook of Hatches" and "Essential Trout Flies", you have all the informatin needed to fill your fly box. I was expecting "Handbook of Hatches" to be another difficult to understand entymology text book of aquatic insect life... I was pleasantly surprised to find that Dave Hughes was able to write in a language that I both understand and apprecialte. Everyone understands (and can pronounce) "Size 14 Tan Caddis"... If you are wanting a book on identifying aquitic insects by species and sub-species complete with latin names then don't buy this book. If you want an easy to read "all you need to know about hatches" book, then you will want to have a copy of "Handbook of Hatches".
